It will not be that long now until the French Open Tennis tournament taking place at Roland Garros in Paris. This year the tournament will run from the 21st May until the 10th June. The first week is the qualifying tournament with the first round of the main draw starting on the 28th May.
The tournament is one of the four big ‘Grand Slam’ tennis tournaments which also includes Wimbledon, US Open and Australian pen and this means that all of the biggest stars in tennis will do their best to be there. The list of participants has already been revealed and therefore those buying tickets will know which big hopes will be taking place.
In the women’s tournament there are six players in the draw which have a protected ranking. This has come about due to injury or childbirth and include Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka, Saisai Zheng, Bethanie Matteks-Sands, Kristina Kucova and Vania King. There will also be 12 qualifiers, 8 wildcards and then the rest of the 128 women will be made up of the top ranked women in the world according to world rankings. Many spectators will be wanting see whether Serena Williams will be making a successful comeback after giving birth to her daughter so recently. There will be plenty of top women trying to make sure that they stop her including her sister Venus Williams, Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniaki, Garbine Muguruza and many others. Many will be interested to see whether any younger players will step forward to try to win or whether it will be some of the older and more experienced players.
In the men’s tournament there are three players with protected rankings and they are Andres Haider-Maurer , Yoshihito and Steve Darcis. There will be 16 qualifiers too as well as 8 wildcards and the rest of the 128 men being made up of the world’s top players. As usual everyone will be interested to see who will win and with Andy Murray and Roger Federer not playing this tournament then it could be between Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic. However, both have had injuries and ocnfuidence problems lately and so it may be the turn of someone else to take the title with Grigor Dimitrov, Thomas Berdych, Nick Kyrgios, Stan Wawrinka and Milos Raonic being possibilities. However, it could be some of the promising youngsters that come forward such as Alexander Dolgopolov, Dominic Thiem, Denis Shapovalov or Alexander Zverev.
