Jelena Jankovic romped into the third round at Wimbledon with a 6-1 6-3 win over Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro.

A day after fellow Serb Ana Ivanovic came within a point of being knocked out, she avoided any such drama with an assured display on Court Two.

Suarez Navarro, 19, was making her debut at Wimbledon as a wild card.

Second seed Jankovic, who benefits from Maria Sharapova's surprise exit from her half of draw, next faces Danish 31st seed Caroline Wozniacki.

She progressed to round three by thrashing Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak 6-1 6-1.

"The conditions were quite tough today. It was very windy but I did quite well and I'm happy to win the match in two sets," said Jankovic, referring to the struggles of Ana Ivanovic and Sharapova.

French Open finalist Dinara Safina, the ninth seed, followed older brother Marat into the third round with a 6-3 6-2 win over Taiwan's Su-Wei Hsieh.

Russian compatriot and fifth seed Elena Dementieva survived a scare against Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland to come through 4-6 6-3 6-3.

But Number Daniela Hantuchova, seeded 10, was less fortunate, the Slovakian going down 6-3 4-6 6-1 to the unseeded Russian Alisa Kleybanova.

Tamarine Tanasugarn claimed a spot in the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time since 2006 as she stunned 13th seed Vera Zvonareva.

The 31-year-old Thai, ranked 60 in the world, ended her disappointing run in the major events with a 7-6 (12-10) 4-6 6-3 victory on Court 18.

She will now play New Zealand's Marina Erakovic for a place in the last 16.

Sania Mirza of India, seeded 32, crashed out after losing 0-6 6-4 7-9 to Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain.

Martinez Sanchez had never won a game on grass before this week.

Mirza, who had wrist surgery in April, was blown away in the first set after making a host of errors but came back from 3-1 down to win the second.

There was little to separate the pair in the decider but Martinez Sanchez pounced in the 15th game to earn the decisive break.

And the 25-year-old served out for victory to earn a third-round contest with defending champion Venus Williams, a 7-5 6-2 winner over Britain's Anne Keothavong.
